Energy Saving Tips

Download The Tip Sheet

Lower your boiler temp

Lowering your water heater to 120°F saves energy and still gives you plenty of hot water—no noticeable difference, just lower bills.

Seal air leaks

Sea ling up small gaps with caulk or weather-stripping is a simple weekend project that can cut heating and cooling costs by 10–20%. It keeps the air you pay to heat or cool inside, where it belongs.

Wash with cool water

Modern detergents are made to work in cold water, so you can skip the hot cycle and save energy without sacrificing clean clothes or dishes.

Set the right fridge temp & keep it full and clean

Keep your fridge between 37–4 0°F for safe, efficient cooling. A well-stocked fridge holds cold better than an empty one, and clean coils help it run even smoother.

Use ceiling fans wisely

Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms—so turn them of f when no one’s around. If possible, set the blades to spin counterclockwise in the summer to push cool air downward.

Put curtains to work

Let in the sun on chilly days by opening south-facing curtains—it’s free heat. On hot days, close blinds to keep the sun out and give your A/C a break.

Program your thermostat

Setting your thermostat back 7–10 °F for 8 hours a day can cut heating and cooling costs by up to 10%—and once it’s programmed, it does the saving for you.

Run full loads

Dishwashers and washing machines use about the same amount of energy whether they ’re half-empty or full; waiting until you have a full load can maximize each cycle.

Remember the one-degree

Adjusting your thermostat by just 1 °F—down in winter or up in summer—can trim about 3% of f your energy bill.

Match flame to pan size

Adjust your burner so the flame stays under the pan—not around it. Flames that climb the sides waste gas and heat up your kitchen.
